Strength meets Tradition
Woodchopping is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and enduring sports, with roots in the country’s rural and forestry heritage. Axemen — both men and women — test their skill, speed, and strength in a variety of chopping and sawing disciplines, including underhand, standing block, jigger pole, and single or double-handed sawing.
The sport is governed nationally by the New Zealand Axemen’s Association (NZAA), which sets the competition rules, maintains records, and oversees national and international representation. Events are held at A&P shows, dedicated woodchopping carnivals, and standalone competitions across the country. From grassroots competitors to world champions, woodchopping in New Zealand blends tradition with fierce athleticism, drawing crowds with its high-speed, high-skill spectacle and keeping alive a proud part of our national identity
